Gardeners Elephant and Castle is committed to providing garden maintenance and landscaping services in a safe and responsible manner. We aim to protect our team, clients, visitors, and members of the public by identifying risks early, applying sensible controls, and maintaining high standards of work across every job we carry out. This policy applies to all gardening services provided in homes, communal areas, business premises, and outdoor spaces within our service area.
Our Commitment
We will take reasonable and practical steps to prevent accidents, injuries, and damage to property while carrying out gardening work. Health and safety is part of our day-to-day operations, not an additional task. We expect all staff and contractors working on our behalf to follow safe systems of work, use equipment correctly, and report hazards or concerns without delay.
Responsibilities
Management is responsible for making sure suitable procedures are in place, staff are trained appropriately, and equipment is maintained in safe working condition. Workers are responsible for following instructions, using personal protective equipment where required, and working with care at all times. Clients also have a role in helping to maintain a safe environment by sharing relevant site information, keeping access routes clear, and advising us of any known hazards before work begins.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working
Before starting work, we assess the site and identify any foreseeable hazards. These may include uneven ground, trip hazards, sharp tools, powered equipment, adverse weather, manual handling risks, hidden obstacles, or contact with plants that may cause irritation. Where necessary, we adjust the work plan, choose safer methods, or postpone tasks until conditions improve. We aim to keep work areas tidy and organised to reduce the risk of slips, trips, and falls.
Equipment and Tools
All tools and machinery used by our team must be suitable for the task, kept in good working order, and used only by competent personnel. Pre-use checks are carried out where appropriate, and defective equipment is removed from service until it has been inspected and repaired. Cutting tools, hedge trimmers, strimmers, mowers, and other powered equipment are handled with caution, with guards and safety features in place whenever possible. Tools are cleaned, stored securely, and transported safely between jobs.
Personal Protective Equipment
Protective gloves, eye protection, sturdy footwear, hearing protection, and other suitable items are used when the nature of the task requires them. We provide guidance on the correct use of protective equipment and expect it to be worn properly. Protective clothing does not replace safe working methods, but it adds an important extra layer of protection.
Manual Handling and Physical Work
Gardening often involves lifting, carrying, bending, pushing, and repetitive tasks. We reduce manual handling risks by planning work carefully, using team lifts when needed, breaking heavy loads into smaller amounts, and using equipment that helps move materials safely. Staff are encouraged to work at a steady pace, take regular breaks where necessary, and speak up if a task feels unsafe.
Weather, Environment, and Site Conditions
Because gardening work takes place outdoors, we pay close attention to weather and ground conditions. Extreme heat, heavy rain, strong winds, frost, and poor visibility can all increase risk. We may change the timing or method of work if conditions are unsafe. We also take care around ponds, slopes, retaining edges, insect activity, animal waste, and any other site-specific issue that could affect safety.
Training, Supervision, and Incident Reporting
Staff receive suitable instruction and supervision to carry out their duties safely. We encourage a culture where questions, concerns, and near misses are reported promptly so improvements can be made. Any accident, injury, property damage, or unsafe condition is recorded and reviewed. Where needed, we take corrective action to reduce the chance of recurrence.
Review and Continuous Improvement
This policy is reviewed regularly to make sure it remains effective and reflects current working practices. We update our procedures when new risks are identified, when equipment changes, or when feedback from staff and clients shows that improvements can be made.
